MEET KADI: The Alabama Photographer Who Dug Deep, Felt Courage
(And Thanks Walgreens… Kinda!).

The truth: I have loved photography for a thooouuuuusannnnnnnnnnnnd years. (Dumb Twilight reference, so sorry – but if you got that, you’re definitely my kind of client!)

Anyways, I remember being in the 8th grade and begging my parents for a camera. My best friend and I would go down by the woods beside my house and have photoshoots — you know, the kind where you tiptoe across a fallen tree and stare off into the distance.

Then, 8 years passed by, I was a married mother to four amazing kids, and I realized I had never attempted to follow my passion. I had thought about it plenty of times, but I just never had the courage to take the leap.

Gulp. That Took the Wind Out of My Sails

After my daughter was born, I got my first professional (to me) camera for Christmas. It was a Canon Rebel SL1. I told everyone that I got it to take photos of my daughter, but deep down, I wanted to pursue photography.

One day, I was talking to an important person in my life about college and how I wasn't sure I wanted to do what I was majoring in at the time. I vividly remember this person saying, "I don't care what you do. As long as you don't do something stupid that you can't make a career out of it…like photography."

Nay-Sayers, First Cameras & Becoming a Mom

Until...

Yes, 8 years after I first got that camera!

I used that very camera to take some Christmas-themed photos of my children. I ordered prints from Walgreens to use as gifts, and when I went to pick them up, they refused to give me the photos! The employee told me they couldn’t print professional photos without a print release from the photographer. I laughed and said, "Oh no, I took these!". The employee apologized and said they sure looked like professional photos.

When I got back out to the car, my husband asked what took so long, and I told him what the employee said. Then I added, "If the Walgreens guy thinks I'm good enough to be a professional, maybe I should just go for it..." And I realize how silly that sounds, but that's what did it for me. Shout out to that Walgreens employee — you changed the course of my life.

Over the next two weeks, I told everyone I knew I was going for it, and started the process of getting business licenses and forming my LLC, and I haven't looked back since.
